AI employees or a virtual assistant: which should you hire?
The short answer
Hire a virtual assistant for work that needs a person: calls, judgment and messy requests. Use AI employees, AI set up to draft one job each, for repeatable replies, reminders and updates.
Compare the job before the hourly rate
A virtual assistant can handle conversations, judgment calls and changing requests. An AI assistant prepares drafts against written rules; it still needs examples, management and a reviewer. Drafting at any hour does not mean a person approves it immediately.
The original October 20, 2026 comparison cited agency ranges of $8–$15 an hour offshore and $25–$50 in the US. These are dated examples rather than verified current hiring rates. Ask each provider what experience, supervision, availability and employment costs its quote covers.
Compare total monthly cost at your expected volume. Include the time to supervise a human assistant, the time to review AI drafts, vendor costs and implementation scope. Avoid comparing a human salary with engineering hours as though they buy the same job.
When a person is the better hire.
Most of the work is phone calls or live conversations
Requests arrive messy and need a judgment call each time
You don't yet have written rules for how the work gets done
The volume is small enough that one person covers it with time to spare
When AI employees are the better first step.
The same reply, reminder or update gets written dozens of times a week
Leads and clients write in after hours
Mistakes come from steps being skipped, not from hard calls
You, or someone on your team, can review drafts for a few minutes a day
AI drafts, your assistant approves.
Your assistant spends their time reviewing and deciding instead of typing. You see only what the written rules don't cover.
